I love our educated, thoughtful, and CONFIDENT kids!!!

This has been another busy week at The Music Box!!!

9 days ago, I had the incredible privilege of working backstage during our performance of Legally Blonde Jr.  To be truthful, my main duty was puppy sitting “Bruiser” (Thank you for letting us borrow him, Madison Chacko).  I had an excellent time talking to these young actors, and they all had a level of professionalism that exceeded more than a few adult companies that I’ve worked with over the years.  Believe me when I tell you that the future of community theatre in our area is bright!!  That night we had a technical malfunction where the music stopped playing for a few moments and the kids handled it beautifully.  I was greatly impressed with their ability to take adversity in stride.  Their “show must go on” attitude was exceedingly impressive.  Huge thanks and kudos for their adult mentors Jimmy Williams, Karl Kleist, and Ben Steltz, as well as all of the “stage moms and dads” who helped out backstage during the run.  Thank you as well to all of the front of house staff that came and provided the professional atmosphere for our kids, we could not have done it without all of your your support.  Most importantly, thank you, Dana, for organizing this wonderful workshop, and directing this wonderful show!!

Speaking of kids, there were a lot of them at The Music Box this past week as we were holding auditions for our Christmas musical, A Christmas Story.  There was a plethora of talent at all three auditions, but we will still be holding additional auditions this coming Saturday (11/1) at noon.  All roles are still open, for children and adults, so we hope to see you there.

As long as we're on the subject of A Christmas Story, there was an interesting story on the auditions by Mary Therese Biebel in The Times Leader.  Unfortunately, I find it very disheartening to have read some of the comments that followed, a few of which, I understand, were so derogatory, that they were ultimately removed.  Now, please let me state for the record, that I personally do not support any level of censorship.  I believe that every opinion should be heard and discussed, no matter how ignorant or misguided the individual expressing them might be.  However, it seems to me that the people expressing these opinions did not even read the article.  They jumped to conclusions and ran with assumptions based on its title.  They all center on gun control and the personal views of our kids around that issue.  They accuse us of censoring that BB gun from the show, and even question how we did Les Mis and Annie Get Your Gun (which was not even our show) without guns.  I know the people who visit our website and read this blog are among the most enlightened, and I also know that those people that commented unfavorably toward theatre in general, our kids, their reputations and their heart, and did not take the time to read a short article in the newspaper, will also probably not take the time to read this blog.  However, I would say to them, “Come and see our shows, witness our kids on stage, and THEN question their confidence and resolve.  Perhaps you might increase your own literacy in the process.”

You can view the article as well as the accompanying comments here…

If you want more evidence of how wonderful our kids are, look no further than this coming Friday where several members of The Music Box Players, adults and kids, will be performing for The Milestones Academy, a school for autistic children.  This is our second visit to Milestones, and we could not be happier to further strengthen our partnership with them throughout the coming season.

I want to take this time to thank all of the parents out there who keep their children in the Arts.  I have said it on numerous previous occasions, but children who participate in the performing arts do better in math and science, they are better readers and writers, they perform better on standardized exams, they have a built in social group, and overall, they are more sympathetic to the human condition.  I know that scheduling is difficult.  I know that the late rehearsals are inconvenient.  I know that keeping track of where your kids need to be after school or in the evening is beyond problematic, particularly if you have two or three (or more!).  They may not show their full appreciation right now, but I promise it will come soon as they grow older.  The dedication and resolve of theatre PARENTS is much appreciated.

Thank you, Mom, for keeping me involved in the arts when I was a child.  It created a lifelong passion for the arts, and love of the personal pursuit of knowledge.

Be well, and save me a seat at the theatre.

The First of Many

Hello everyone!!!!
…and welcome to the first ever (at least to my knowledge) Music Box Dinner Playhouse “Musings of the President” blog.  One thing that I am VERY proud of at The Music Box is how connected and familial we are with our patrons and actors.  It is an absolute pleasure seeing all of you at our shows, as well as working with some of you in shows, but I was looking for a way to connect with you, and even more people, outside of the time when we’re performing.  I figured the best way to ensure everyone knows what is going on in the theatre and stay connected with us, even when we’re not in production, is through weekly communication!!   I hope that you find it entertaining as well as informative and it helps your attachment and fondness for the theatre grow, as we work together to create the art we all love!

                Now on to business!!

I wish to fully address the rumors that currently surround our current schedule for 2015, and the fact that we may have lost some shows.  Some of our patrons might not realize that the shows that we produce (the ones that are not homegrown) are licensed by companies that can decide on a moment’s notice not to allow us to do their particular show.  It happens occasionally for a variety of reasons.  Unfortunately, this IS indeed the case for “Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat” originally scheduled in our March slot.  We will be unable to produce that show for you in 2015.  However, at our last board meeting we believe to have found a suitable replacement.  We will be announcing that replacement soon.  We are currently working the aforementioned rights issues with the licensing company, and while I am VERY excited to announce the replacement, I do not think that a blog is the proper forum to make an official announcement.  Look for that official announcement on our website and on Facebook in the coming weeks!

I also understand that there are rumors circulating around us also losing Grease.  Please allow me to dispel those immediately.  While we are still in discussions with the licensing company, we have not lost the rights as of yet.  Grease remains on our schedule for September, and will remain so until we hear something definite.

…and what a schedule it is!!!  There seems to be a little something for everyone!  Which creates the opportunity to segue into my next major announcement…our full 2015 calendar is online!!!  Every show, every workshop, every audition, every special event, every…EVERYTHING…is now at your fingertips!  We will be adding more as our season grows.  We have plans to add some “One Weekend Only” special shows, and possibly even some weekly events going forward, so please visit our calendar often, and be on the lookout for those at…

http://www.musicbox.org/mbcalendar.htm

Additionally, if you are looking to host a special event of your own, and you think our theater might be the perfect place to do that, please call our offices at (570) 283-2195 and talk to Angie or Michael, and they will connect you the right people to make your event happen with us.  Please understand that, with our own hectic theatrical schedule, we cannot accommodate every request, but a phone call wouldn’t hurt to see what options are available!!

Even our Board of directors is growing!!!  We would like to welcome longtime stage mom, Kathy Thomas to our BoD.  If you see her around the theater, please congratulate her on joining our efforts to bring you the best dinner theatre in the area.

OMG!!!  OMG, YOU GUYS!!!  An excellent opportunity to do that will be this weekend when The Music Box Dinner Playhouse presents “Legally Blonde Jr.”  The performances this weekend are the culmination of weeks of hard work resulting from our Teen Academy Workshop!  These young actresses and actors are the future of theatre in the area, and they are joined on stage by many regulars of the Music Box, who have been mentoring these young performers.  Directed by Dana Feigenblatt, who always does wonderful work with these workshops, it is surely going be wonderful.  I would like to publicly thank Dana, as well as her crew of dedicated Players, that helped these talented young people learn the art of stagecraft.  I cannot wait to see it this weekend!  Check our calendar for full details.

Finally, I cannot believe that we’re not even out of October yet, and I’m getting ready to talk about Christmas!!!  What are we Macy’s?  Anyway, next Monday and Tuesday we are having AUDITIONS for “A CHRISTMAS STORY: The Musical”!!!

This is a NEPA premier, so you’ll definitely want to come out for these auditions!!!!  Based upon the famous 1983 film, all of the wonderful things you remember form the movie are intact…the bb gun…the leg lamp…in musical form!!!  We are very excited to be the first theater in the area to bring this show to you!!!  It will be directed by Debbie Zehner, who is making her first Music Box appearance since last year’s AMAZING, “Les Miserables”.  Please allow me to be the first (ok..maybe not the FIRST) to say, that I am THRILLED to have her back in the building again!  Music Direction will be handled by the wonderful Kim Crofchick …errm…Johnson… yeah…it’s going to be a while before I get used to that.  Congratulations on your marriage, Kim!!!

Again, check our calendar for details on the auditions.
I spent a lot of time on it, so please use it!

I know that I rambled on a lot and hit you with a massive amount of information, but it was the first blog post, and in my defense, we DO have a lot going on this week.  So I think it was digital ink well spent.

Thank you all for your continued support, both on stage, off stage, in our audience, and in our hearts!

See you at the theatre…save me a seat!!
